Compare the editing process to building a house …
Let’s start with the design. You need an architect – in editing terms, this is a knowledgeable mentor or book coach who’ll guide you each step of the way and help you craft your book.
Once you have your design, you’ll need the foundations, framework and roof for your new house. This is your structural edit – where I look at everything that holds writing together.
Now that your structure is solid, you’ll need walls, windows, doors, flooring, plumbing and electricity. These are your copy edit elements – the things that make your writing whole.
You’re nearly ready. All you need are the finishing touches – paintwork, carpet, furnishings and a good tidy up. This is your proofread – the little details that give that final polish.
What stage are you at?
If you’re not sure, I can offer you two options:
Book in for a free, no-obligation consultation. Use this time to describe your project and ask questions. I’ll ask you a few questions too. Together, we can work out what stage your project is at and how I can help. These quick consultations are also a great way for us to get to know each other and see if we’re a good fit. I’ll explain how I work, allowing you to see if my style suits you and your needs.
Email me a sample or two. If you’re writing a book, send me up to 4000 words, plus a brief synopsis. If you’re working on web content, blogs or brochures, send a few through and an outline of your ideas. After reading your work, I’ll provide you with verbal feedback via a 60-minute online meeting. You can then leave it there, or we can discuss how I may be able to assist you further.
Fee: AU$250 (one-off session, no obligation to continue)
If you know what you need, let’s get started.

Book Coaching and Mentoring
If you have a simmering idea for a story, a business book or a blog post series but you’re not sure where to start or if you’re on the right track – then book coaching (or mentoring) is going to be perfect for you. We’ll communicate often – discussing your ideas, your questions, your concerns. We’ll work out where your skills already shine and which ones need polishing.
I’ll provide you with the tools you need and encourage you every step of the way.
My support. Your words!

Sometimes called a manuscript appraisal, structural editing looks at the big picture issues, including theme, voice and consistency.
If you’re writing fiction or memoir, I’ll look at your narrative arc, plot, characters and setting. We’ll discuss point of view and voice as well as other elements.
If you’re writing non-fiction, including articles, web content and blogs, I’ll check the believability and consistency of your content, its relevance and clarity, how the writing is organised and whether anything is missing.
My focus is always on where your strengths lie, and I use these to help you develop your impact in other areas.
If you’re a few drafts in and feel like you’re going round in circles, or you think you’ve finished but you’re not sure, you probably need a structural edit or manuscript appraisal. Book in for a free chat to be sure.
Fees start at AU$400 per 10,000 words. (A picture book edit package is $250).
Sometimes referred to as line editing, a copy edit really should follow a structural edit – after all, there’s no point trying to put in your windows if you don’t have the framework.
When I’m copy editing your writing, my role is to help ensure every word, sentence and paragraph sends the message you want to be conveyed. As I’m reading, I’ll be asking myself (and you) if a particular sentence could be more concise, whether the reader will really ‘get it’ and if anything is missing, repetitive or contradictory.
If your writing has been through the structural editing process, then you’ll possibly be ready for a copy edit. Get in touch for a no-obligation chat to be sure.
Fees start at AU$35 per 1000 words.
This is the very last stage before a document or manuscript goes to print and is released to the critical eyes of the world. When I’m proofreading, I assume you have already perfected your words as much as you can with a structural edit and at least one copy edit pass – this way, I can focus on finding that wayward comma, the annoying typo and the font size that’s trying to get away with being a smidge bigger.
You need a proofread when you know your document or manuscript is ready for its final polish.
If you’re a few drafts in and feel like you’re going round in circles or thinking you’ve finished but are unsure, you probably need a structural edit or manuscript appraisal. Book a free call to be sure.
Fees start at AU$25 per 1000 words.
To be perfectly clear from the outset – beta reading is not editing. If you book a beta read on your manuscript, you will receive feedback purely from a reader’s perspective. I will tell you what I thought about the story ‘as a story’. This includes:
- whether or not I was hooked at the start
- which characters resonated with me
- anywhere the story seemed to slow down or drag
- if I thought the story was ‘believable’
- what I thought about the ending
- similarities with other stories.
What it boils down to is whether I would buy your book if I saw it on the shelf. In a beta read assessment, I will be honest with you, but not mean.
Beta reading feedback is an opinion, and not definitive or representative of whether a publisher would like your manuscript. Because a beta read is done from the perspective of a reader, I only offer this service in genres that I choose to read for pleasure or tend to read a lot of and enjoy.
Use your free call to tell me a little bit about your manuscript. If I can’t do a beta read on it, I’ll know someone who can.
My beta reading rates are calculated on the length of your manuscript and the extent of feedback you would like to receive.
Fees start at AU$300 per 10,000 words.
